Emery watched the little birds outside the window of the train car. They seemed to be enjoying themselves as they flew from branch to branch. A small part of him envied them. Without his parents the old family home seemed a strange and empty place. A large part of him didn’t feel like he could return to that place now that he had finished his education. At the same time, since he was finished with school he’d lost his place in the dorm as well.

He was sure he could find an apartment, but it wouldn’t seem like home without his brother. He sighed as the train puffed into motion. He envied the birds. They had the freedom of a place to fly. They had the security of knowing where they could land and seek shelter and warmth. With a heavy sigh, he leaned back against the seat and closed his eyes. He had a long way to go.
